Drew watched Liza pull away. So that’s why the boys had asked him to be here this morning. They were trying to play matchmaker and he was pleased that, for whatever reason, they had decided it was okay for him to date Liza.

He strode to his SUV. Having a relationship with Liza would mean developing one with her sons. They were good kids, full of energy, smart, and kind. He had observed them in their groups and both Johnny and George would find a way to pull the quieter kids into all activities. They had an innate ability to make everyone around them feel included.

Once he parked next to her minivan at Daisy’s, he went inside and found her sitting at a table for two off to the side, away from the path of customers. He smiled at the countergirl and held up two fingers and pointed to the table. With that taken care of, he sat down.

“I didn’t expect to be having coffee with a beautiful woman this morning.”

He liked how her cheeks flushed pink when he gave her a subtle compliment. He leaned over the table and pecked her cheek.

The countergirl came over and set two mugs on the table and poured coffee. “Can I get you something from the case?”

“I’d love an apple muffin with maple glaze if you have any this morning.” Liza smiled at Drew. “They’re delicious.”

“Make it two, please.” He couldn’t take his eyes off her. Only talking on the phone this last week had been torture. Yes, he had gotten to know her, but this is what he longed to do—just be with her.

She stirred some cream into her coffee and handed him the pitcher as if she knew how he took his even though this was the first time they’d had coffee together.

“Thank you.” He added a generous splash. “So, tell me, how’s Johnny doing?”

Her smiled dimmed as her eyes met his. “He’s on top of the testing and still hesitant about doing the shots, but he’s doing almost all of them now.”

“And George? This has to be hard for him too.”

She held the mug to her lips and blew on the hot coffee. “We went to see his pediatrician as a precaution and the doctor was great with him. He explained that because Johnny has diabetes doesn’t mean he’ll get it. And like always, George does what his brother does, so eating according to the food plan has been easy. Well, so far.”

“That does make life a little simpler.” He wanted to take her hand to let her know he was here for her and the boys. But he was letting her set the pace of their relationship.

The apple muffins were delivered. Liza cut hers in half. “How did you happen to be waiting for us this morning?”

“Funny you should ask. I ran into the boys yesterday right after lunch. Johnny asked why I was never a greeter in the morning and George said I should try it today.”
